Emily Hite, RYT-500, E-RYT-200, and a certified SmartFLOW® yoga instructor, loves teaching yogis of all backgrounds and levels of experience. Through alignment-based flow and restorative classes she encourages students to build awareness of posture, create space to breathe, and simply enjoy living in their bodies. Practice with her at YogaWorks Palo Alto or contact her for individual or group private instruction or yoga in the workplace.

Emily began practicing yoga while she was a professional ballet and modern dancer. She became a dedicated practitioner after meeting her teacher, Annie Carpenter, whose SmartFLOW method provides clear structure and fluid sequencing that supports students through a rigorous physical practice in a playful, compassionate environment. Emily has completed her 200 and 500-hour teacher trainings with Carpenter and assisted her classes in Oakland and Venice, California.

Raised in Irvine, California, Emily lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She danced with the Sacramento Ballet under artistic directors Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda, performing classical and contemporary repertory and works by George Balanchine, and dancing principal or soloist roles in ballets including Alice in Wonderland, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Swan Lake. She later danced in San Francisco with the companies of Margaret Jenkins, Hope Mohr, Robert Moses, Amy Seiwert, and Mark Foehringer, performing throughout the U.S., China, and Peru. She is a digital media manager at Stanford University, and also writes about yoga, medical and health news, academic research, and the arts. Since 2006, she has provided research assistance to Stanford's Professor Janice Ross, most recently for Ross's book Like a Bomb Going Off: Leonid Yakobson and Ballet as Resistance in Soviet Russia (Yale University Press 2015). Emily holds a B.A. in art history from Stanford University.

"I am so grateful for Emily. She has given me the gift of yoga! Over the past year, I've gone from a complete yoga newbie to hopefully working my way toward a life-long practice because of Emily's incredible teaching. Her love for yoga, coupled with her kindness and knowledge make her an incredible guide, whether you're just starting or practicing for many years, you'll benefit from taking classes with Emily."

"Em is an intuitive & accessible teacher!!! Her ability to make yoga poses attainable is clear, simple, yet magical!"

"As a former professional ballet dancer, Emily has an exquisite understanding of alignment, which she articulates beautifully in class....On top of her expertise about asana, anatomy and alignment, she's about the kindest, warmest, gentlest teacher I know. It is a pure delight to be in her class!"

"Emily Hite has a background in ballet that shines through her yoga instruction, which enhances her class structure.  Her extensive understanding of the body's limitations allows her to instruct each student to the best of their abilities.  I enjoyed her yoga classes because my body felt reopened after each class session."
